Paul Young

Then: With a love of music encouraged by his parents, Britain's Paul Young recorded albums with Streetband and The Q Tips before releasing his first single as a solo artist in 1982. The song "Iron Out The Rough Spots" stalls and the follow-up "Love Of The Common People" (an early hit for Nicky Thomas) follows the same fate. It would be the third release, a cover of Marvin Gaye's "Wherever I Lay My Hat (That's My Home)", that gets nominated by NME as Single Of The Week - the song would go on to top the U.K. charts for 3 weeks. Young's debut album, No Parlez, follows with a second U.K. #1 "Love Will Tear Us Apart" originally by Joy Division. Further singles hit the charts including "Come Back And Stay" and a re-release of "Love Of The Common People". Young would then be invited to record a lead vocal line for Band Aid's "Do They Know It's Christmas". His next album, The Secret Of Association, continues his success with hits "I'm Gonna Tear Your Playhouse Down", "Everything Must Change" and a cover of Hall & Oates "Everytime You Go Away" which tops the U.S. chart. 1986's Between Two Fires hits #4 on the U.K. charts but provides no major hits. He opts to spend more time with his family.

Now: But, Young came back strong in 1990. The release of Other Voices came with a bang as a cover of the Chi-Lites "Oh Girl" unusually does better in America than his homeland. Young begins having more trouble with his voice but hits the U.K. Top 20 with a cover of Crowded House's "Don't Dream It's Over". Young also hits #22 in the U.S. with an update of "What Becomes Of The Brokenhearted" from the movie Fried Green Tomatoes. April 20th, 1992 Young joins Queen on "Radio Ga Ga" at the Freddie Mercury tribute "A Concert For Life". Young returned in 1993 with "Now I Know What Made Otis Blue" (U.K.#14) from his album The Crossing which included session work from Jeff Porcaro before he dies in 1992. In 1997, Paul trained his voice with a Mexican band called Los Pacaminos in the U.K. A self-titled album came out in 1999 with very little promotional support. Young has since changed management.
