Yarbrough & Peoples

Then: Calvin Yarbrough and Alisa Peoples met when they were very young. They shared the same piano teacher and both performed in the choir. Both went to nearby colleges in the same town and pursued music careers. Robert, Ronnie and Charlie Wilson (later of The Gap Band) caught a performance by Yarbrough and referred him to Leon Russell as a back-up vocalist for Russell's tour. At the end of the tour, Yarbrough returned to a band called Grand Theft. In 1977, Peoples showed up to catch Grand Theft and even sang a few songs with the band. The Gap Band was on a roll and when Yarbrough asked for the band to catch their act, they were quickly recommended to band manager Lonnie Simmons. By 1981, Yarbrough and Peoples debut, The Two Of Us, was issued to critical acclaim, healthy sales, a Top 20 hit single and #1 R&B single "Don't Stop The Music". Calvin and Alisa were wed a short time later. Eight more singles made the R&B charts by 1987 but by then they stopped. They redirected their talent to working with the other acts signed to Total Experience/RCA including The Gap Band and Penny Ford (who would do vocals on Snap's singles "The Power" and "Ooops Up").

Now: Total Experience folded and the couple returned to Texas PGD/Polygram Pop/Jazz issued "Best Of Yarbrough and Peoples" in May 1997 and "Don't Stop The Music" is on the label's compilation, "Dance Funk" released November 1997.
