| Roxette Then: Roxette is the partnership of singer/songwriters Marie Fredriksson and Per Gessle. ABBA might have put Sweden on the map but Roxette took the torch and kept going. Since their first release Pearls Of Passion in 1986, they went from Swedish pop band to international superstars. It was their third album Look Sharp! (their first released internationally) in 1988 that brought them worldwide acclaim. The album included two #1 US hits ("The Look" and "Listen To Your Heart") and a #2 hit "Dangerous." The band seemed like they could do no wrong with more than 8 million copies of Look Sharp! sold worldwide. Now: Roxette didn't stop there. The next release Joyride put 5 singles into the US Top 40 charts. Two #1's ("Joyride" and "It Must Have Been Love" from the movie Pretty Woman), a #2 hit with "Fading Like A Flower (Every Time You Leave)" and their first World Tour in 1991 pushed the album to over 10 million in sales. A tour album, a few studio albums and a rarities release would come out with little more fanfare in the US but they still would sell 4 million per album internationally. The US was left out on the release of Roxette's greatest hits package Don't Bore Us-Get To The Chorus possibly because of the lack of American airplay when released in 1995. In 1996 they took a strange turn... they went Spanish. Balades en Español was a collection of 12 of the bands best ballads remixed with new vocals in Spanish. In 1999, they returned to form with the album Have A Nice Day. International success drips off the band still... but can America be re-conquered? |
