Northern Lights

Then: This Canadian supergroup was brought together by music talent manager Bruce Allen in 1985 and followed Band Aid (predating that year's USA for Africa) by recording the single "Tears Are Not Enough" on Feb. 10, 1985 which expected to raise $500,000 for famine relief in Ethiopia. Bryan Adams, Bruce Cockburn, Burton Cummings, Corey Hart, Dan Hill, Geddy Lee, Gordon Lightfoot, Anne Murray, Joni Mitchell, Mike Reno, Neil Young, Carroll Baker, Veronique Béliveau, Salome Bey, Robert Charlebois, Lisa Dalbello, Claude Dubois, Don Gerrard, Ronnie Hawkins, Paul Hyde, Mark Holmes, Andy Kim, Murray McLauchlan, Carol Pope, Liberty Silver, Lorraine Segato, Alfie Zappacosta, Liona Boyd, Tom Cochrane, Tommy Hunter, Kim Mitchell, Oscar Peterson, Paul Shaffer, Jane Siberry, Martha Johnson and Sylvia Tyson all provided vocals. The song was written by David Foster, Bryan Adams and Jim Vallance with additional French lyrics by Rachel Paiement. Producers Foster and Vallance played instruments on the single with Paul Dean, Steven Denroche, Doug Johnson, David Sinclair and Hayward Parrott which was engineered by Bob Rock, Geoff Turner and Humberto Gatica. The 12" single was released in March of 1985 and claimed the #1 spot on the Canadian singles chart in late April selling over 300,000 copies. The song would be included later on the USA for Africa album, We Are The World. A documentary of the recording session would be aired on Dec. 22, 1985.

Now: Most of the participants are still recording to this day. By 1990, sales of the documentary video, single and portion of the We Are The World album reportedly exceeded $3.2 million. The funds raised from the project have been administered by the Northern Lights for Africa Society in Vancouver with 90% going to Ethiopian famine relief and 10% going to Canadian food assistance programs.
