Lipps, Inc.

Then: Lipps, Inc. was the outlet for Minneapolis native Steven Greenberg's multi-instrumental talents. After playing in several bands, Greenberg was turned down right and left in his search for a production deal. He took another chance with a song he created melding disco and R&B titled "Rock It". The song's local airplay was noticed by execs at Casablanca Records and when approached by Greenberg they commissioned an album. Along with several session musicians, Greenberg enticed sax player and vocalist Cynthia Johnson to the project. Johnson was singing weekends with what would later evolve into The Time. Their debut album, Mouth To Mouth, was released in 1980 along with the first single "Rock It". The song did nothing. The second single, a dance tune titled "Funkytown", followed and held onto the U.S. charts #1 position for 4 weeks. A re-release of "Rock It" failed to make the Top 40. Their next album was Pucker Up which featured a soul remake of the Ace classic "How Long". But the album would get little notice so would their next. In 1983, Johnson left to spend more time with her daughter. Margaret Cox and Melanie Rosales have taken her place since.

Now: In 1992, a Best Of Lipps, Inc. was released. Today, Steven Greenberg, founder, writer and producer for Lipps, Inc. is CEO of a web page design company, Designstein, in Minneapolis.
