Johnny Hates Jazz

Then: Originally, this band formed around Calvin Hayes, Mike Nocito and Phil Thornally (ex-Cure). Thornally co-wrote, their first single, 1986's "Me And My Foolish Heart" which failed to chart. Due to prior commitments (producing Robbie Nevil) Thornally opted out of the band. A new frontman/songwriter was found in, Clark Datchler, a vocalist with Hot Club. The next single (written by Datchler) "Shattered Dreams" put them on the map with a U.S. #2 and a U.K. Top 10 hit. They released a few more singles including a U.S. Top 40 track titled "I Don't Want To Be A Hero" but in 1989 songwriter/vocalist Clark Datchler left to pursue a solo career. There are a lot of reasons stated that Datchler didn't like the production values, lack of promotion behind the band and that he wanted more control of what he wrote.

Now: Datchler released an album titled Raindance with the single "Crown Of Thorns" in 1990. He never found the same success. In 1991, with Phil Thornally stepping in where Datchler left off, JHJ released Tall Stories but no major singles came from it. A "Best Of" was released in 1993 and so far nothing new has been recorded.
