| The Fixx Then: In 1980, college pals Cy Curnin and Adam Woods placed an advertisement in the London music press looking for musicians to round out the band they hoped to form. Guitarist Jamie West-Oram, keyboardist Rupert Greenall and bassist Charlie Barret all responded to that ad. The group recorded their first UK single, "Hazards In The Home," as The Portraits, but soon thereafter changed their name to The Fixx. The Fixx's debut album, Shuttered Room, yielded two hit singles in the UK and remained on the American charts for more than a year. Bassist Dan K. Brown replaced Barret in1983. The band saw its greatest commercial success with 1983's Reach the Beach which went double-platinum in the United States and included 3 Top 40 hits, "One Thing Leads To Another," "Saved By Zero," and "Sign Of Fire." 1984's Phantoms produced the Top 20 hit "Are We Ourselves?," 1986's Walkabout brought the Top 20 ballad "Secret Separation" but 1987's React and 1988's Calm Animals did little to return the band to the success of Reach The Beach by the end of the decade. Now: In 1991 the band returned with Ink scoring another chart hit with "How Much Is Enough?" After taking a few years off, the four original members of The Fixx reunited in 1995 and began writing a new album. The band also began touring again, and in 1997 released the limited edition Happy Landings CD, a sneak preview of some of the material to be found on their 1998 Elemental CD. Elemental was followed in 1999 by the two-CD 1011 Woodland set, a re-recording of the band's favorite songs stripped down and re-worked for the occasion. The band (with 90s addition Gary Tibbs on bass) is currently playing 50-60 live shows per year and the new CD, Want This Life, is due out in June of 2002. Tiffany L. Sanders |
