Jazzy Jeff And The Fresh Prince Then: Will Smith earned the nickname "Prince" from his grade-school teachers because his smooth-talking ways in his West Philadelphia school was more charming than any monarch's son. Tacking on the popular adjective "Fresh", Smith by-passed a scholarship to M.I.T. to follow his dreams of making it big in showbiz. It might not have happend without his friendship and partnership with Jeff Townes (A.K.A. Jazzy Jeff), who began working together when they were only twelve years old. Working hard and practicing their skills payed off when eight years later they had five U.S. Top 20 hits, two platinum albums including the Grammy-winning debut He's The DJ, I'm The Rapper which featured the hit singles "Parents Just Don't Understand" and the tribute to Freddy - "A Nightmare On My Street". The duo found a niche in mainstream America by getting a playful message out without going to the lows of gangsta rap and other hardcore acts. They would Now: After seeing the reaction Will Smith's charm on the masses worked, he was cast in 1990 to appear in a modernized Beverly Hillbillies story, Fresh Prince Of Bel Air which would run for 6 seasons. Jeff would make appearances during the run of shows as the duo continued releasing albums with the 1991 hits "Summertime" (their biggest at #4 on Billboard Top 40 charts), "Ring My Bell" and in 1993 their last hit "Boom! Shake The Room". A movie career was calling right around the corner with the small film "Six Degrees Of Separation" and action hit "Bad Boys" with Martin Lawrence. The movies got notice prompting a truckload of scripts dropped at his doorstep. Major success started with Independance Day (ID4) and rolled over into Men In Black. It was at this time that Smith decided to bring music back into his life as a solo artist with the soundtrack's title track. The single did so well that Smith soon followed it up with a new album, Big Willy Style which brought the hit single and phrase, "Getting Jiggy With It" to the world. 1997 showed an improved relationship with his ex-wife, a new girlfriend in Jada Pinkett and another spot on the most successful movies ever list with Men in Black. He and Jada began the new year with a New Year’s Eve wedding. Will was seen in 1998's Enemy of the State, taking on conspirators and CIA types. They ended the year with 1998 MTV Music Video Awards: Best Male Video for "Just the Two of Us" (which he accepted while carrying son Trey) and Best Rap Video for "Gettin' Jiggy Wit It." The next year Wild Wild West was released to mixed reviews but still did well at the box office but the soundtrack's title track became another Will Smith hit. |
