| Divinyls Then: Led by the provocative Chrissie Amphlett, whose songwritting with guitarist Mark McEntee is the basis of the band, the Divinyls have recorded some amazing work. They formed in Sydney in 1981, and their first mini-album was written for the 1982 film Monkey Grip, and produced the Australian Top 10 single "Boys In Town," "Only The Lonely," as well as a supporting role in the film for Christina Amphlett. To the surprise of many, she was nominated for Best Supporting Actress at the Australian Film Awards. Signing with the UK label Chrisalis Records, their first full album Desperate was a hit in Australia. Several hit singles and extensive touring bridged the gap to What A Life (1985), which was greeted enthusiastically; but the sales weren't there. Later material fell short of their early work with the exception on the single "Pleasure And Pain." The band basically pared down to a duo with a hired on touring band when neccessary. The band underwent a revival in 1991 with the controversial song "I Touch Myself," a deliberately blatant reference to masturbation. The song went Top 10 in Britain and Top 5 in the US. Now: Currently the Divinyls are on hold. As of February 4th 1998 - Christina Amphlett is playing Judy Garland in "The Boy from Oz." The musical about the life of Peter Allen will open in Sydney Australia in March. |
