BUZZ

Then: BUZZ was created by keyboardist/vocalist Jean-Christophe Van Thienen (also known as Titi or J-C) in Lille, France, as a vehicle for his compositions in 1983. J-C studied classical piano as a child and found keyboards to be the cheapest approach to creating his sound (although he also played a bit of bass.) Early work included two collaborators (bassist/programmer Sylvestre Vanuxem and guitarist Vincent Stevenin) but slowly became a rotating membership which included a drummer, a visual artist (for live shows), backing vocalists and dancers. In 1985, the See YOU Sioux demo was released. The set was selling well enough at indie record stores for Buzz to get signed by emerging local label Danceteria. Four 12" singles were released on the label: 1985's "Kennedy/Picasso," 1987's "Marinetti/Lo Sai," 1987's "Berlin/Sexe/12 Inch Allah" and 1988's "Kennedy (25th anniversary mix)/El American Dream." Despite being the first artist signed to Danceteria, they were dropped in 1989 as the label wanted to head in a more guitar rock sound (and the group reportedly hadn't been paid for their releases.)

Now: Disenchanted with their time on the label, BUZZ went on indefinite hiatus. J-C would form a project called X-Voto with Excés Nocturne's former guitarist (where he started singing in English.) That project ended without label interest and several other side-projects started and stopped. J-C had been performing solo dates as well as shows with his side projects until 1996 when a 10-day coma side-lined him for awhile. During the interim, he found himself lured by the growing quality of home studios and the emergence of computers. In August of 2005, BUZZ was relaunched as a solo project. Since then, about 60 tracks have been recorded at home and were later remixed and remastered by len from Implant (B)... who also works with Anne Clark and Front 242 vocalist Jean Luc in 32 Crash. In 2006, a compilation was self-released, BUZZ 1984-89. In April of 2007, the album Les Musiques Nouvelles was released. Another album, Minimal & électronique, heads to stores in February of 2008. Upcoming plans include a remastered version of their classic 1985 demo See YOU Sioux (which was only previously available on cassette.) Another album entitled BUZZ Blitz Klub is due after that (which includes unreleased remixes by Renegade Soundwave, The Young Gods and many others) followed by a release entitled Vaudou électrique.
