| Berlin Then: After forming Berlin, bassist/keyboardist John Crawford was searching for a new vocalist, and ex-competitive figure skater Terri Nunn who had done some five TV movies, guest appearances (Vegas and Lou Grant) and a feature film with Debra Winger and Jeff Goldblum seemed to fit the bill. The six-piece band released one single and broke up by 1981. John and Terri regrouped with four new members on the mini-album Pleasure Victim in 1983. It found an audience with the song "Sex (I'm A...)" even though it's suggestive lyrics and moaning got it banned from many radio stations. 1984's follow-up Love Life awarded them with a #23 US single for "No More Words." Keyboard and dance producer extraordinaire Giorgio Moroder approached the now three-piece band to work on a track for a movie called Top Gun. Two years later "Take My Breath Away" became an Academy Award winning #1 hit in the US and UK. Respect for the band showed in guest appearances on their third album, Count Three And Pray. Guitarists including Ted Nugent, Pink Floyd's David Gilmour and the Cars' Elliot Easton. Terri left the band in 1987 to pursue a solo career but would have an Adult Contemporary hit with Paul Carrack with "Romance" in 1989. Now: Nunn's solo career was a growth spurt starting with 1992's album Moment Of Truth. New directions opened when Nunn worked with other songwriters and musicians including Danny Carey of Tool. In 1993, Nunn had another hit song with "Under the Gun," a duet with Sisters Of Mercy. She also went back to celluloid, for The Gift with Jane's Addiction/Porno for Pyros' Perry Farrell. After repeated urging to bring back Berlin, Nunn gave in. She brought in Steve Siebold of Hate Dept. on keyboards and assist with musical direction. The new line-up was rounded out with Rick Ballard (guitar), Dave Eckles (bass) and ex-Billy Idol drummer Beachy. Berlin was reinvigorated and have pushed past the earlier boundaries with 1999's Fall Into Heaven EP's 1 & 2. |
