Basil, Toni

Then: With a long history of choreography credits, Toni Basil slowly moved to making music. From early work on the show Shindig to the movies American Graffiti and the Monkee's move Head, she showed a versatility for teaching dancing along with creating. She also had a part in Easy Rider. It was after working with David Bowie and co-directing the Talking Heads that she formed her own dance troupe The Lockers and recorded her first album. After the release of the hit album Word Of Mouth in 1981 (which had none other than Devo (The Akronites) backing her and a version of "Be Stiff"), a startling thing happened. A cheesy filler track titled "Mickey" went to #2 in Britain. Then #1 back home in America. A great follow-up track "Over My Head" didn't reach the same height and neither did a second self-titled album. She reappeared as Dean Cameron's mother in the movie Rockula alongside Thomas Dolby in 1990.

Now: It seems Basil's career was stronger in the choreography arena. During the late 80's and even now she works with several artists on the dancing in their videos and for their tours.
