| Asia Then: This is probably one of the longest lasting supergroups. They were formed in 1981 from ex-King Crimson vocalist John Wetton, keyboardist Geoff Downes (ex-Buggles/ex-Yes), guitarist Steve Howe (ex-Yes), and Carl Palmer former drummer of Emerson, Lake And Palmer. The self-titled debut was initially dismissed by critics as overly commercial and unadventurous, yet it held the US #1 album slot for 9 weeks. The first single "Heat Of The Moment" took the US #4 spot and the follow-up single "Only Time Will Tell" earned a US #17. 1983's release Alpha didn't meet with the same sales success as the debut even though the single "Don't Cry" was a #10 US hit. Greg Lake (also ex-ELP) joined to replace John Wetton, yet Wetton came back again in 1985 for the third album Astra. With lack of sales and this time no single to support the album, the band disolved until 1990. Now: Asia has continued mainly with one mainstay, Geoff Downes. A collection of hits and new material called Then & Now was in 1990. A few more albums have come out and recently after a fire in the band's recording studio the band recovered some unreleased demo tracks they entirely forgot existed and have released them as Archives. |
