Paula Abdul

Then: Abdul got her start as a former L.A. Lakers cheerleader and choreographer for artist ranging from Janet Jackson, ZZ Top and Duran Duran. But it was her debut album, 1988's Forever Your Girl, that people will remember. The release of "Straight Up" started a run of hits including 4 US #1 singles "Straight Up," title track, "Cold Hearted" and "Opposites Attract." A previously ignored single, "(It's Just) The Way That You Love Me," would climb up to Billboard #3 position. Abdul's spectacular big-budget videos helped push the sales of Forever Your Girl past seven million in the U.S. alone.

Now: Her sophomore album, 1991's Spellbound, had a lot to live up to. But followed with #1 singles "Rush, Rush," "The Promise Of A New Day" and three more Top 20 hits. Abdul took a few years off after Spellbound in which she got married to Emilio Estevez, successfully fought a lawsuit filed by a former backup singer that alleging Abdul didn't sing on Forever Your Gir and divorcing Emilio Estevez in 1994. 1995 saw Abdul return with her third album, Head Over Heels, and a Top 40 hit "My Love Is For Real." A Paula Abdul 'best of' album is due out in 2000.
